The pandemic forced a long pause in many charitable programs and activities the Hospital supportsbut it forced a dramatic increase in others, including emergency preparedness.Emergency preparedness is considered an important community building activity, which is considered a charitable achievement. The Hospital continued to invest in our traditional charitable programs, even though activity was decreased because of COVID-19 precautions, said Pamela Puleo, the Hospitals Chief Advancement Officer. The real investment was in being prepared and working to keep our community safe from COVID-19.The Hospital focused an unprecedented amount of funding, time and energy into confronting the pandemic, even while losing approximately $26 million to COVID-19.The losses were realized because non-emergency services were put on hold to keep patients and staff safe and to ensure staffing and resources would be available for the possible surge of COVID-19 patients. While CARES Act funding provided some relief, it didnt fill the gap completely. The comprehensive, almost overnight response included establishing an Incident Command Center to coordinate activities, increased training, and renovating areas of the Hospital and Concord Hospital Medical Group (CHMG) practices. The Hospital, with its partners, also established a 300-bed Alternative Care Site (ACS) in the community to handle any patient overflow and established safe screening and testing sites. Those initiatives and many others helped the Hospital manage the first wave of the pandemic through the spring and summer. They contributed to a more informed response when a second wave approached in the fall. They also have enabled the Hospital and its community partners to be much better prepared to mount a coordinated response to future community-wide emergencies. Most people take a hospital for granted, until something like this happens, Puleo said. People then realize preparedness, readiness and willingness to come to work under hazardous conditions has a huge impact on the health of the community. This response and community building shows the value of a quality health system in our community. In Fiscal Year 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Concord Hospital continued to invest in identified community needs, including access to affordable health care, behavioral health and substance misuse, vulnerable populations and healthy behaviors. The Hospital invested $84,499,079 of its annual budget to meet the needs of vulnerable neighbors and all community members. These charitable achievements include $80,655,580 to respond specifically to the health needs identified in the most recent Capital Region Health Needs Assessment conducted in 2018. Included in Hospital achievements are $31,319,326 in unreimbursed costs for caring for 13,873 Medicaid patients. In addition, Concord Hospital Trust provided $2.9 million to support the Hospitals charitable work and the needs of vulnerable populations for a total charitable investment of more than $87.4 million. No one organization can do it all; collaboration and partnerships are vital to meeting needs, enhancing health and supporting our community members quality of life. Concord Hospital is grateful to the many organizations that joined our charitable activities in 2020.
