CONCORD HOSPITAL TRUST

While he’s long been a proponent
of philanthropy, Matthew Gibb, MD,
MHCDS considers himself even more a
champion of people — his colleagues,
patients, and community.
As the Senior Physician Executive
and Chief Clinical Officer at Concord
Hospital Health System since arriving
in 2019, Dr. Gibb has brought with
him not only decades of experience
as an interventional cardiologist but
also a vision for supporting healthcare
workers. Now, that vision has taken
shape in the form of the Cardiovascular
Institute (CVI) Education Scholarship
Fund. With a lead gift of $100,000
matched by his physician peers,
colleagues, and many generous donors,
Gibb helped launch an initiative to
invest directly in the professional
development of staff who care for
cardiovascular patients.
“I’m not a name-on-the-building guy
or a bricks-and-mortar guy,” Gibb
explains. “I’m a use-your-money-for-
people guy.”
Gibb’s approach recognizes that
equipment and facilities don’t mean
as much without skilled, engaged,
educated staff to operate them.
In establishing the CVI Education
Scholarship Fund, Gibb is imitating a
similar endowment he helped set up
in his previous post at Carle Health in
Illinois that also laid a foundation for
ongoing staff advancement.
Applications for scholarships
opened in 2026 to any CHHS staff
member involved in cardiac care,
including nurses, technicians, medical
assistants, and others. The fund will
support a wide range of professional
development opportunities
through grants up to $2,000 and may
include certifications ranging from
cardiovascular technicians to critical
care registered nurses who work in
cardiology, along with attendance
at conferences, meetings, and other
networking and educational events.
Gibb also envisions financial support
for staff-led research projects,
opportunities for publications, and
participation in demographic and
epidemiologic studies.
Steve McManis, Chair of the Concord
Hospital Trust, praises Gibb’s foresight
and generosity in initiating the fund,
noting that a fundamental element
of remaining competitive is directly
related to attracting and retaining
employees.
“Education is at the heart of that
mission. The ability to build a
longstanding fund to focus on this is
extremely valuable,” McManis says.
“The concept of an endowment is to
provide ongoing support long after
the initial funding. I strongly endorse
this concept, and it’s my hope that
many others in the future join us in
contributing to the CVI Education
Scholarship Fund.”
While the tangible benefits of
increased expertise are clear, Gibb also
emphasizes the fund’s deeper impact
on workplace culture. “When physicians
take an interest in staff development,
the whole team gets better,” he says.
The CVI Education Scholarship
Fund also promotes professional
development that directly relates to
patient care, creating a meaningful
connection between personal growth
and the organization’s mission.
Staff who are continuously learning,
Gibb notes, become more focused
on deploying that knowledge, sharing
it with colleagues, staying current
with best practices, and bringing fresh
perspectives to patient care.
“Training and teaching actually elevate
the patient experience,” Gibb adds. “It
benefits the patient by staff embracing
that culture of wanting to learn more.”
He believes the same about philanthropy,
describing it as a tangible way to show
commitment to the entire healthcare
team. Charitable giving, Gibb explains,
is an investment in the work
environment that leads to positive
culture and team advancement.
“As a physician, you invest a lot in your
work and your direct patient care,” Gibb
says, “but [giving back] is a statement to
the organization and those around you
that you’re invested a little bit more than
that; you’re invested in the people.”
